In the first match of the final round, Argentina lost to Brazil 0-3. Argentina’s best player Marcos Milinkovic entered the match only as part of a double sub in game three. Milinkovic started every match except today. It is good for Argentina if Brazil gets into the Olympics at this tournament…. basically, Argentina would only have to beat Venezuela in their zone to qualify! Marv Dunphy. Photo courtesy of Pepperdine University. In the second match, a victory by 8-0 Russia over 6-2 Bulgaria would have secured a top three finish. Bulgaria led by the very talented Matey Kaziyski, played with great confidence and defeated the Russians in five. The Russians have some good young talent, some great experienced talent and one of the finest outside hitters — Sergey Tetyukhin — in our sport. Sergey’s coach pulled him at a critical point in the match and never played him again. They could have used him in game 5 and we could have used him in game 5! Without going into the details, the win by Bulgaria makes the road a lot tougher for the USA.

Before a sellout crowd, the US beat Japan 3-0… 25-18, 27-25, 25-19. The attackers did not make an error and the team sided out at 94 percent in game one. Japan hit zero for the game. Once again, Hugh stayed with the same pattern, starting Ball, Salmon, Priddy, Millar, Lee, Gardner, Lambourne and subbing Clay Stanley as a server.

There is not much I can say regarding Italys match against Spain; other then I saw it in Bar Napoli and in the company of those who had been there for Italys previous match other then the already known fact that we won 2-1. Naturally as with any quarterfinal match, this one was not without its great moments which saw cheers from us; Italys ever faithful tifossi. The first of which coming at the 25 minute mark when a long range effort from Dino Baggio found the back of the Spanish net and put us ahead 1-0, which was also the score that ended the opening half.
