Coaches Comments

From FIVB

Jon Uriarte (Argentina)

“The organization has been fantastic and the competition is getting tougher. All the teams are well prepared and the results show that if you lose concentration you can lose to anyone. We expect to keep concentration and get good results.”

Russell Borgeaud (Australia)

“We have played three games and we are pretty happy with how we played in a couple of those. We had one bad set against Russia when they killed us. The team is steadily improving, we have young players and I am very happy with their progress.”

Tatsuya Ueta (Japan)

“We will keep the positive energy and the good points from the first round of matches and modify the weak points. We will play some strong teams but we will keep our concentration and do our best.”

Yoo Jung-Tak (Korea )

“I am sorry about the first round and we will do our best for the rest of the matches. We hope to win two or three games before we go home to Korea.”

Vladimir Alekno (Russia)

“We are happy with our results so far and that we have played our best. But I know this is only the beginning and we have more matches, but we are well prepared to play our best in the remaining games.”

Antonio Giacobbe (Tunisia)

“We have faced three strong teams in the first group and the components of my team I thought were good components. I am glad about that, and I hope to go on in this direction and play better every day if it is possible and win what we can.”

Press Conference in Toyama

Bernardo Resende (Brazil)

“In the first stage Brazil played well in some moments, but Bulgaria and Puerto Rico are the ones playing the best right now. They are more stable than others. The second phase in Toyama is very important. We need to play more a solid game than in the first stage in Matsumoto and I am confident we can do this.”

Martin Stoev (Bulgaria)

“The matches in Matsumoto were very interesting and there were a lot of surprises. I’m sure in Toyama it will be the same.”

Zakaria Ahmed (Egypt)

“In Matsumoto, we played the best team in Brazil and also Bulgaria and Puerto Rico. The three losses are normal results. I think we’ll play better from tomorrow. We’ll try to do our best, but there is a big jump between African nations and the rest and we’ll try to raise ourselves nearer to the level of the others. We have the champion of Europe Spain and then the NORCECA United States in Toyama so it is going to be tough. I think in the third and fourth stages we’ll play better because we’ll play against teams of a similar level: Argentina, Asia teams, Tunisia. We are still going, though, and will be pushing to win two or three matches.”

Marcelo R. Mendez (Spain)

“We had a very hard time in Matsumoto and there were teams of a very high level. The matches are still continuing in Toyama and we hope we can start to collect some good results.”

Carlos D. Cardona (Puerto Rico)

“We were tired but have now recovered and our staff is working hard with the players to get them better prepared. We had a good first round and we are going to try our best in Toyama against the two teams we will face. Our aim is clear against each team. We just try to do what we can do. One promise is that the winner between Spain and us will buy the loser a cup of coffee.”

Hugh McCutcheon (USA)

“After inconsistent play in the first round, we hope to play at a more steady level. Our captain (Thomas Hoff), who is a very honest man, perhaps felt the team’s mental and emotional preparation for the victory against Brazil was less than against Puerto Rico. To go from the emotion of the Brazil match to play Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico is a very good team and I can’t imagine why we didn’t have the same intensity against them as we did against Brazil, because they are a very good team. I think that is why our captain was angry, because we lost.”
