The Asian Volleyball Confederation has an article on the upcoming World cup, from their perspective.

Beijing, China, October 16, 2007 — Host Japan is to meet wild card Dominican Republic on the opening day of the 2007 World Cup women’s section on November 2 at Tokyo while the other Asian teams Thailand will play against Europe champion Italy and Korea fight with Serbia, also in Tokyo, according to the schedule published by FIVB.

A total of 12 teams are going to take part in the round-robin format in four different stages from November 2 to 16.The teams are Brazil (South America champion), Italy (Europe champion), Cuba (NORCECA champion),Japan (host country),U.S.A. (NORCECA vice-champion), Serbia (Europe vice-champion), Poland (wild card), Korea (Asia championship: best after Thailand), Dominican Republic (wild card), Kenya (Africa champion), Peru (South America vice-champion) and Thailand (Asia championship: best after Japan and China)

World Cup defending China will not participate in the 2007 edition as they as host of the 2008 Olympic Games has already qualify for the Olympics. The FIVB Volleyball World Cup is the first of three Olympic qualification tournaments for Beijing 2008. The top three teams at the World Cup will book their tickets to the 2008 Olympics. Teams not making the World Cup medal stand will have two other opportunities to qualify for the Olympics with continental qualification tournaments in December 2007 and the World Olympic Qualification Tournament in May 2008 at Japan.
