Kenyan Womens National Team start World Cup training
Kenya has begun a training camp in preparation for the Womens World Cup. They qualified by winning the African Championships, gaining the only spot available. With a team full of experience, and a few new faces added to those who played in the qualifiers, everyone has to earn their spot in the team.
It was race against time as Kenyan national women Volleyball team assembled for residential training at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani to prepare for this year’s World Cup set for Japan next month.
The team which won the only women slot for the continent after beating Algeria during the qualifications held at the same venue last month was in an upbeat mood as they reported for training under head coach Sammy Kirongo, assistant coaches David Lung’aho, Abdul Muge and statistician Sammy Mulinge.
Speaking at the team’s camp, Kirongo said he has opted to retain all the players who did duty during the qualification tournament and included only a few new faces in the team.
“Presently I have only 15 players in the team since I want full concentration and the final 12 will be named just before we jet out for the World Championships,” said coach Kirongo.
However the coach warned that it will not be automatic selection in the final team for those who did duty during the qualifiers as the exercise will be conducted on merit and every player has to fight for a jersey in the final 12. More FIVB
